Q: What is the process for taking an Honours Thesis or Directed Studies course in CMPS?

In order to apply for an Honour Thesis or a Directed Studies course in CMPS, students need to find a supervisor. Once the project is defined and the scope detailed, the supervisor is responsible for creating the course outline and an application form signed by the supervisor is submitted to CMPS Admin at . The appropriate forms can be found on the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science website (Undergraduate student Forms). Upon approval, the student will automatically be registered in the class by the Dean’s Office, that is to say, the student is not required to register for the course.

Q: Where can I find the program requirements for my program?

The current version of BSc programs can be found on Academic Calendar: https://okanagan.calendar.ubc.ca/faculties-schools-and-colleges/faculty-science/bachelor-science-programs/major-programs at https://www.calendar.ubc.ca/okanagan/index.cfm?tree=18,360,1102,1448. If your program has gone through curriculum changes and does not match what you see on your Degree Navigator, you can access previous versions of programs in the Calendar Archive https://www.calendar.ubc.ca/archive/okanagan/2122/indexd960.html?tree=18,360,1102,1448.

Q: Which version of my program should I follow?

You should follow whichever version your have been registered in. By default, this corresponds to the active version of your program when you declared you major. If you are unsure, see next question.

Q: How do I know which version of my major I am registered in?

By default, when you declare your major you are enrolled in the most recent version of the program. If you are unsure, you can view your registered version in Degree Navigator.

Q: Can I change my version?

Yes, provided you that version existed when you were enrolled at UBC. In other words, students who were admitted to UBC prior to the degree requirement changes have the choice between the different versions. The relevant policy can be found at https://www.calendar.ubc.ca/okanagan/index.cfm?tree=3,296,0,0. Specifically:

Degree or program requirements are established and modified with the knowledge and approval of Senate, and are recorded in faculty, school, and college entries. Unless a student takes an extraordinary number of years to complete prescribed studies, the student is usually given the option of meeting requirements in effect when first enrolled, or of meeting revised requirements subsequently approved by Senate.

By default, when you declare your major you are enrolled in the most recent version of the program. If you have registered to an older version of your program and would like to move into the current version1 , this will need to be manual changed in your file by an Academic Advisor.

Q: What is “Double Counting”?

Students enrolled in the following programs: double major, major/minor, double honours or honours/minor should be award of what is often referred to as the “Double Counting Rule”, The Double Counting Rule limits the number of credits that can count towards both programs in a double major, major/minor, double honours or honours/minor. Specifically,

“No more than 6 upper-level credits that count toward the program-specified requirements for the first major or honours may be double counted to fulfill requirements for the second honours, major, or minor.”
